To infinity - and beyond

The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator V3 represents the third generation of the company's captivating ambient reverb pedal, which lets musicians with a taste for adventure explore seemingly endless depths with everything from classic reverb tails to pitch-modulated reverb effects. This is more than simply a sophisticated reverb pedal, however - the interaction between the Afterneath's Drag control and its Mode switch also puts octave/pitch shift-like effects at the user's fingertips, which through the addition of an expression pedal allow the most spaced-out ambient sounds to be created on the fly. In addition to its otherworldly ambient sounds, the Afterneath V3 can also deliver warm-sounding lo-fi delay and reverb effects that will delight more conservative players.

Cast the perfect spell

Alongside controls that players can expect to find on a reverb pedal - like Mix and Length - the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 also features controls for other parameters that make it stand out from the competition. Diffuse, Reflect, and Dampen adjust the spread, depth, and brightness of the individual delay lines respectively, and work together to determine the precise characteristics and spatial feel of the final reverb effect. The Drag control in turn determines the separation of the delay lines - closer together for more conventional reverb effects and farther apart for a more scattered sound; this influences the resonant structure and creates different pitch effects by altering the tonal frequency, with nine different pitch reverb scales (Unquantized, Unquantized with slew, Unquantized volt/octave, Chromatic scale, Major scale, Minor scale, Pentatonic scale, Octaves & fifths, and Octaves) accessible via the Mode dial.

Somewhere between pitch and reverb

Connecting an additional expression pedal to the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3's "EXP" jack is the best way to harness the pedal's full potential; the expression pedal then adjusts the Drag control settings, allowing the player to navigate from whammy-like pitch bends to EDM-esque sweeps and everything in between. This foot-control option additionally means that the Afterneath is way more than just a pedal for guitar: It can also be combined to great effect with synths and keyboards, bass guitars, and even drum machines to create some utterly wild compositions. And should the user be less in the mood for a voyage through the realms of ambient effects, the Afterneath V3 will also deliver excellent results as a standalone reverb pedal on their board - and one that doesn't just sound like a conventional reverb tank.

About EarthQuaker Devices

EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.

Down to the last detail

As users would expect from a pedal at this price point, no corners have been cut in terms of the individual components used: Everything is housed in a heavy-duty metal chassis that makes it fully roadworthy, and the pedal features a silent, relay-based on/off switch that also allows momentary operation, while true bypass switching means that there is no colouration of the signal when the Afterneath is inactive. At the same time, it is still possible to have the reverb tails fade out gradually after switching off the pedal thanks to the "Tails" function, whereby the wet signal naturally decays and slowly fades to silence. All of this makes the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 a great choice for musicians on the lookout for a sophisticated, versatile reverb pedal that delves deeper than most others would dare.
