Harley Benton MV-5JB Natural

I bought it as a backup bass, but it was a surprise to me. A very good instrument for the price: neck comfortable to play, keeps action very low without buzzling. The pickups are good and noiseless, and more noiseless if you use them toghether. Good quality strings, good setup: the instrument is medium level, and worths at least 2 times the price you pay. The frets are well set, even if not very smooth but anyway good. The sound is good: well defined frequencies well balanced togheter: already played in a live concert, it kept the tuning for the whole show. I bought also the case, very light at a reasonable price: all the bundle for less than 300€ is a bargain. Definetly has become one of my basses I play live.

What a fantastic bass! The neck is really fast, the finish sublime, the frets smooth , the tuners tight and slick, it all fits together perfectly. I've been playing bass for a very long time, I've gigged and toured a lot and I've had some really high end basses over the years, and in many respects HB are right up there with them, so much so that HB is now my go to brand. You can spend thousands on a bass but it won't necessarily guarantee you a fantastic instrument, but with HB if there's something you don't like... change it! Not that I've ever felt the need, and I now proudly own 9 HB Basses. JUST WOW!! 😊

Positives:
Der Bass sieht super aus. Ist natürlich Geschmackssache. Was auf den Fotos nicht so gut rüberkommt ist, dass die Hölzer und Farben super zusammenpassen. Schöner karamelliesierter Hals, Griffbrett nicht zu dunkel und der Korpus hat durch den Lack auch eine passende Farbe. Die Tuner halten die Stimmung. Für meinen Geschmack haben sie zu viel Spiel und das ist Meckern auf hohem Niveau. Toll, dass jetzt direkt schon hochwertige Saiten auf den sehr günstigen Bässen drauf sind. Früher konnte man bei einem neuen Harley Benton direkt die Saiten wechseln. Die Pick-Ups machen das was ich erwartet habe. Es sind echte single-coils ohne stacking / humbucking. In einer verstrahlten umgebung brummen sie, wenn sie einzeln aufgedreht sind. Zusammen brummen sie nicht. Und sie klingen so wie „vintage“ single coils klingen sollen. Der output ist auch entprechend gering. Ich finde sie perfekt, so wie sie sind. Die Bünde sind sauber abgerichtet und absolut plan. Perfekt! Binding und Lackierung ist makellos. Die matte Rückseite des Halses lässt sich sehr angenehm bespielen.
Negatives:
Entgegen aller meiner sonstigen Erfahrungen mit Harley Benton und Thomann, was der Bass schlecht eingestellt. Der Hals war in die falsche Richtung gebogen. Habe eine halbe Umdrehung am Halsstab gebraucht um ihn überhaupt erstmal gerade zu bekommen (und dann weitergedrecht). Zwangsläufig war die Action übertrieben hoch eingestellt, sonst hätte ja alles mordsmäßig geschnarrt. Die Action war auch nicht gleichmäßig über die Saiten hinweg eingestellt. Ich kann mir nur vorstellen, dass ich keinen fabrikneuen Bass bekommen habe, sondern einen, den schon jemand in der Hand hatte und sehr sehr merkwürdig eingestellt hat. Normalerweise bekommt man von Thoman gut eingestellte Bässe und Gitarren, mit denen ein Anfänger sofort loslegen kann.
Kleinere Schönheitsfehler:
Das Schlagbrett und die Elektronikabdeckung passen nicht exakt zusammen. Da sind Absätze von ein paar mm. Wenn man die Bilder hier genügend reinzoomt, sieht man das. Die Stimmechaniken ziehen die Saiten leicht wie einen Fächer oberhalb des Sattels auseinander. Ich stelle mir vor, dass man das mit einer anderen Bohrschablone für die Kopfplatte einfach hätte fluchtend hinkriegen können. Kann man auch auf den Bildern hier sehen. Die Potiknöpfe stehen ein paar mm über der Abdeckplatte.
Neutral:
Es ist kein Multi-Scale Bass. Die H-Saite ist ensprechend labberig und klingt auch anders als die E-Saite. Das kann bei dieser Bauweise nicht anders sein. Man sollte sich darüber nur im Klaren sein, oder es sogar mögen. Mein Exemplar wiegt 4,7 kg. Absolut OK für einen Fünfsaiter-Erle-Jazzbass. Trotz der leichten Mechaniken ist der Bass etwas Kopflastig.
Fazit:
Wie immer bei HB bekommt man ein tolles Instrument für den Preis. Andere Marken bieten bei 3-4 fachem Preis keine so gute Qualität und auch nicht so tole features. Das ist kein billiges Anfänger-Instrument sondern ein wertiger Bass. Ich bin begeistert und werde ihn auf jeden Fall behalten.

Después de varios días usándolo en ensayo y práctica, puedo decir que este bajo me sorprendió más de lo que esperaba.

Primero, la comodidad. Desde el inicio se siente bastante tocable, aunque sí requiere una calibración básica (como cualquier instrumento nuevo). Ajustando el alma, la acción y el quintado, logré dejarlo en un punto muy cómodo, incluso con acción baja sin trasteos. El mástil responde bien y se adapta rápido, sobre todo si ya vienes de tocar regularmente.

En cuanto al sonido, es un bajo pasivo tipo Jazz Bass, lo que significa que no trae presets ni tanta electrónica como otros modelos. Al principio puede sentirse más “limitado”, pero en realidad es más honesto: el tono depende mucho de tu técnica. Tiene un sonido claro, definido, y permite sacar un tono redondo si trabajas bien la dinámica con los dedos. Con ambas pastillas abiertas se obtiene un balance muy usable, y jugando con el volumen de cada una puedes moverte entre un sonido más gordo o más definido.

Algo importante es que este bajo te obliga a tocar mejor. Si tu ataque no es limpio o tocas muy fuerte, el sonido se vuelve más metálico. Pero si controlas la mano derecha, puedes lograr un tono bastante cálido y profesional. Esto lo veo como algo positivo para desarrollar técnica.

En el aspecto visual, se ve muy bien. El acabado natural con el golpeador negro le da una apariencia bastante limpia y “pro”, incluso por encima de lo que cuesta. No se siente como un instrumento barato.

Comparándolo con bajos activos que traen más opciones de ecualización, este es más simple, pero también más directo. Es un bajo que funciona muy bien en contexto de banda, donde lo importante es el groove y la consistencia más que tener mil configuraciones.

Conclusión:
Es un bajo muy bueno por su precio, cómodo, con buen sonido y excelente para tocar en banda. No es un instrumento que haga todo por ti, pero sí uno que responde muy bien cuando tú haces bien las cosas. Ideal para alguien que quiere algo sólido, confiable y con feeling clásico tipo Jazz Bass.
