Shell configuration

Shell sizes

We have divided the drum sets available in our web store into different groups: standard, rock, studio, fusion and other sets. These divisions are based on the musical styles and the sizes of drums which are necessary to play those styles.

A classic standard configuration usually consists of the following sizes:

  • 12" x 09" tom tom
  • 13" x 10" tom tom
  • 16" x 16" floor tom
  • 14" x 5,5" snare drum
  • 22" x 17" bass drum

A classic rock configuration usually consists of the following sizes:

  • 12" x 09" tom tom
  • 16" x 16" floor tom
  • 14" x 5,5" snare drum
  • 24" x 18" bass drum

(Variations featuring a second bass drum or a second floor drum are available here, too)

A classic studio configuration usually consists of the following sizes:

  • 10" x 08" tom tom
  • 12" x 09" tom tom
  • 14" x 14" floor tom
  • 14" x 5,5" snare drum
  • 20" x 17" bass drum

A classic fusion configuration usually consists of the following sizes:

What is included in your set

Normally not everything your find on the illustrations of the premium brand catalogues is included. The "sample drum sets" are usually shown complete with all shell sizes available, all the stands and mounting systems, along with the complete cymbal set. A look at the description is usually a sobering experience. Here at Thomann web store, we try to show the set as it will be delivered to you at home. This is why we distinguish between drum sets and shell sets.

Premium drums in particular are often offered as shell sets. When buying a shell set, you are only buying the shells. It is important to find out what size shells are actually part of the set. Often, such sets consist only of the tom shells with the stands and a matching bass drum. The snare must then be order additionally, or you keep using the one you already have. These shell sets are a good solution for those who already know what exactly they want or who want to assemble their own custom set.

Whereas the snare drum is normally not part of a shell set, you can expect one to be included in a drum set - along with further hardware such as mounts, stands, hi-hat stand and foot pedal. However, a drum stool, a first set of sticks or even cymbals (hi-hats, crash, ride) are usually not included. If you want to start playing on arrival, you should opt for a complete drum set. Complete drum sets are perfect for beginners, who after all have no equipment with which to complete a partial set and whose ideas about the particular sound they want to create are as yet unformed, as these come with practice.
