Super-Cardioid Capsule

The MK 41 is strongly directional. Sound arriving from off axis is attenuated even more than with a cardioid. The pickup is “drier” and less susceptible to acoustic feedback than any other SCHOEPS capsule type (a loudspeaker should not be located directly along the rear axis of the microphone, however).

Its directivity is highly independent of frequency, so that even sounds arriving off axis and reverberant sound are registered without colouration. Consequently, even distant placement of the capsule produces a very natural sound pickup. This is a real advantage over interference-tube “shotgun” microphones, whose directivity is very frequency-dependent – exceeding that of a supercardioid only at higher frequencies. Interference-tube microphones are notoriously sensitive to their position in a room, where the shifting patterns of reflections cause corresponding shifts in sound color. Thus the MK 41 are surprisingly effective, space-saving alternatives to shotgun microphones – and being small, they can often be placed closer to the sound source.

An M/S microphone arrangement can be set up at quite some distance from the sound source if an MK 41 is used for the “M“ channel.

This is the capsule used on many film sets, for dialogue. It is great in that role, because when you miss the peak of the signal because you aim slightly beside the source, you can simply bring it up in the mix, because the MK41 has virtually no off-axis coloration. Most Schoeps mics are good in that respect, but the MK41 is their king, making it sound very natural, even when there is a lot of room reflection. That, plus the fact that it is a hypercardioid makes is eminently useful for recording voices and solo acoustic instruments.

All Schoeps mics sound very well balanced, neutral with a warm tone to them. The MK41 fits that description perfectly too. For recording piano I would not suggest these, but a more "clinical" sounding microphone, such as DPA omnis, because the Schoeps warmth can be overbearing a bit too much with the already deep warmth of the piano. But for strings, both bowed and plucked, and voices I can highly recommend the MK41.

Superb realism in recordings

Anybody on a filmset or in a studio wants to grasp reality while being able to tweak it in the post-production studio. This microphone catches in a great way and getting off axis is not a weird sounding story, but a gradual diminishing of soundpressure, not a timbral difference. The pricetag is the only negative aspect!
