Must buy, but has software issues
freezeware 26.02.2023
Good:
-More inputs than SSL2/SSL2+
-Some professional mixing options
-SSL 360 software and direct routing
Bad:
-WME driver is no longer mono for channels, therefore WME audio driver applications (like ShadowPlay) capture both CH1 and CH2 in a L/R configuration. This will result in CH1 playing in L-channel, and it is not possible to make it non-stereo.
-Sometimes when powered on, outputs may be unresponsive or play white noise. This will likely be fixed at later date with a firmware update.

Excellent sound. But other aspects could be better
Sweeners 03.06.2026
Great sound from this unit, and it is easy to use. However, there are a couple of things that could be better. #1 Durability of some of the switches seems questionable. They feel flimsy compared to the switches on a high quality unit such as a Yamaha. SSL need to improve the quality of the switches for this to score 5 stars. Also, the lack of quality has made me question whether I want to upgrade to the BigSix at some point in the future. Before I purchased this unit, I was of the view that the BixSix was inevitable. However, since buying the unit I've decided rhat if the SSL 12 doesnt stand the test of time (i.e. problems with buttons, or problems with driver support). Then I wont be proceeding with the BigSix. My initial plan is to Use the SSL 12, upgrade to BigSix then use the SSL 12 for mobile recordings.
#2 the features has been marked as only three stars since the software package is a bit too stingy. There are some good downloads. But the majority of them are only LE's, or only 3 month trials. I'm not a rent-to-use kind of guy when it comes to software, and in my culture if you are spending nearly 400 quid on a piece of premium harware, it should include the native software. Example being that mixbus is a standalone DAW. It includes integrated modules, and lots of them, buy they are not available as a stamdalone vst in your own native DAW, not can mixbus be included as a vst inside your DAW. I'm sure it will be useful once I figure out how to use it. Not too impressed at the software.

The hardware is good, the sound is great. The hardwarw has the potential to be great by improving the durability of the switches. The software is good, buy it could be great if it included more free vsts. These are all things that SSL xan do to improve the product.

If I'm scoring it solely on sound quality, it scores an unquestioned 5.
