Tascam DR-40X
Tascam dr-40 is a recorder that outclasses the competition with its price to quality ratio! The device is solidly built, and thanks to its light weight and compact dimensions it is very handy! It is fun to use! The recorder is made of plastic, but it is very solid! All components are also of very high quality, so I'm sure I'll be using this equipment for a long time! I am very pleased that I have so many possibilities in such a small device! The built-in mixer and the possibility of using the recorder as a USB interface will save me a lot of time and money, both on the demo mix and on additional equipment. The choice between the XY and AB configuration of the built-in microphones allows the appropriate technique to be adapted to different conditions. Plus for the ability to connect two additional microphones, as well as the ability to record up to four tracks side by side!
I really like the menu, it's very clear so won't be a problem even if you don't have time to study but you just have to record right away.
It can be controlled using the phone application, a very nice thing, especially since it is not convenient to approach the recorder every time we have everything configured and want to record, all you need is a phone on your knee or close to your hand.

Quite Noisy
The built in mics are quite good but the preamps for the external XLR's are quite noisy, especially for microphones with a lower sensitivity.

Exactly what I was looking for, but not perfect.
While the build quality of this device is not perfect, as the plastic casing causes a lot of handling noise, the overall quality of the device is excellent.
I mainly use it to record via external condenser mics, and it does this job very well. But be prepared to store extra batteries in your bag for recording sessions! A 5V USB powerbank would allow for longer recording sessions, but it makes the portability an issue. If this isn't a problem for you, then this device will suit you well.

I would recommend to avoid this model
Been used TASCAM DR-40 last year and it was just fine, without any issues. But when I bought this one, and it's a new model (DR-40X) of the same product, I found out (and not only me), that it's not working (not turning on) with batteries included or any other ones. It only works when plugged-in with USB cable, for me it's not right and I don't want to use this product only with USB cable.
Such a shame TASCAM made new model like that, they've changed only USB port from mini-USB to micro-USB and changed the screen color, but ruined very good product it was before. And also now they're not supplying this item with SD-card like it was with DR-40 model.
Overall, recording sound is very good. But ... it's not portable.

Perfect
I love this device. I had a Tascam wireless which i broke and chose to go with this one. The battery life is amazing, the features are awesome - it can be a full-fledged input device on your favorite DAW. It can handle the room with the angled mics and then plug in your choice of two channels from your mixer (L/R vocals, mixer sum, etc.). The buttons feel sturdy and the overall quality is very nice.

Works Remarkably Well
I used this to record audio of an amateur theatre production to accompany a video. I ran in an XLR stereo mix from the sound desk (line level) and recorded the room with the built-in mics. I was able to blend these together after and ended up with a remarkably good sound for the price. Saved a lot of time compared to mixing a multitrack recording. Very pleased with this purchase.

Don't buy
If you plan on using Phantom Power with this device make sure you buy a USB battery to plug in to your Tascam, as the minute you put Phantom on the Tascam turns off. which is a poor quality design.

The best portable mic i have owned
This is the best mic and sound recorder i have owned so far and for the price it's a steal if you ask me. The sound quality of the mics are top notch as well. It also feels realy sturdy even if it's just a plastic casing.
