noise floor not ok for voice recordings
Mr Tea 17.05.2022
this thing got good reviews of many others, and its inexpensive so I gave it a try. My first boundary mic so far, so I wanted to try out if it would make sense for recording church organ, piano and/or voice. My conclusion when trying just some first voice recordings at my studio: forget about it. Forget pipe organ, piano and voice recordings with this thing. The noise floor was just terrible high. I tried it out with different recorders/interfaces, cables, just to make sure, and I compared it directly with another cheap condenser mic. which I did put on the floor in a similar position. the cheap condenser mic gave so much better results and lower noise. I did send the sound files to Thomann, and got a new mic. Very nice, but unfortunately it had the same terrible self noise when trying it on recording voice. I gave up. So how can that be? My theory is that it may perhaps be ok when putting it in a drum because of the drums high volume and sound pressure? I didn´t buy it to use it on drums. So in the end I guess for recordings of more delicate or less loud sound sources like voice or other instruments, no way of using it, its self noise would spoil any recording.
