Compressor legend with extras

There's no shortage of 1176 clones on the market, and US manufacturer Black Lion Audio already offers its own take with the 'Seventeen', an FET compressor/limiter inspired by the classic 1176 design. The Bluey, however, stands apart, drawing inspiration from a truly unique unit – the favourite vocal compressor of mixing legend Chris Lord-Alge, an early 'blue stripe' 1176 that had been extensively modified over the years. While most 1176-style compressors are modelled after the later 'Black Face' version, Black Lion Audio’s Bluey commands a unique place in the lineup, combining an authentic character with modern versatility. It features a wet/dry mix control for blending compressed and unprocessed signals and a link option for stereo use – both rare finds in the 1176 family. Deliberately positioned in the higher price range, the Bluey more than justifies its cost through exceptional build quality and an impressively faithful recreation of the legendary original.

Perfect vocal compression

The Black Lion Audio Bluey will immediately captivate users and listeners with all the familiar strengths of an FET compressor – and particularly those of a well-executed 1176 clone. The device delivers lightning-fast response times, the iconic and inspiring 'All-Button-In' mode, effortless operation, and a natural synergy with virtually any source material. The meticulous recreation of the numerous modifications found in the original unit becomes evident on hearing its distinctive midrange presence, which is perfectly tailored to complement the human voice. Few compressors match the Bluey's ability to make vocals stand out with greater clarity and authority, all while maintaining a smooth, artefact-free sound.

Exclusive professional tool

Of course, Black Lion Audio’s Bluey isn’t just a standout choice for vocals – it handles every classic 1176-style application with ease and character, from punchy Rock guitars to crisp drumkit overheads, proving it's far from a one-trick pony. Yet it's on vocals where the Bluey truly shines, delivering a distinctive warmth and presence that's hard to match. For anyone with the necessary budget who's after a top-end dedicated vocal compressor, this device offers an incredibly effective, professional-grade solution brimming with that unmistakable analogue mojo.

About Black Lion Audio

Black Lion Audio is a US company from Chicago that has become known for the modification of industry-renowned microphone preamplifiers, digital-to-analogue converters, and signal processors. However, the manufacturer's portfolio also includes innovations such as the PG-1 Type F Power Conditioner, which was developed completely in-house. The Black Lion Audio team has always taken great care to only produce devices with a high standard of sound and workmanship, which has earned the manufacturer an international reputation within the audio industry. With the 2021 release of the Revolution 2x2, Black Lion Audio also expanded its existing product range with a compact audio interface, which brought to bear all of the manufacturer’s accumulated experience and expertise.

Maximum authenticity

Once tested, the Black Lion Audio Bluey often earns a permanent place on the lead vocal bus, where this recreation of Chris Lord-Alge's favourite vocal compressor reveals its full potential. A long-time admirer of SSL 4000 mixing consoles, Chris typically operates his original Bluey through an insert on just such a desk, and this combination defines much of his signature sound. To achieve a similar tonal character, pairing the Bluey with an SSL-style channel strip proves particularly effective, and for those working without a large-format console, Black Lion Audio has thoughtfully integrated three op-amps that replicate the buffer circuits of an SSL 4000 insert path, ensuring that even when connected directly to a DAW, the Bluey retains its unmistakable authenticity and sonic charm.

QUALITY: Heavy, extemely solid build, all made of metal. All knobs have nice resistance to them, nothing is wobbly. Buttons work great too. The VU meter is great, has back light. This thing is built like a tank! It's one of hardware pieces that you know will last for decades.

SOUND: It's ultimate tone colouring box! The harmonic distortion it imparts on the audio signal, makes it pop out and stay upfront / in your face. It's subtle effect, but definitely heard rather than just felt. It instantly brings your tracks to the front of the mix. Like with all audio equipment, while it may not always be great for all types of audio signal, to my surprise, running it in bypass (comp mix knob at 0%) instantly added analog feel even to tracks that don't sound good with 1176 comp. Once you add peak reduction, this box starts to bite. The mix knob is amazing to decide whether you want the full colour, or just analog goodness by running it via input and output stages without compression circuit.

IN USE: I found it incredible on female vocals (instant sound of a record), guitars (behind vocal yet very forward and present). Of course, its peak reduction capacity is unmatched for tracking - usually 2-3dB of reduction is all you need, and it does add plenty of character already. Go further to 5dB reduction, and it sharpens the signal like a distortion/saturation box.

REMARKS: Does not compare to any blue face plugins, beats them all by a mile mostly in the compressor action. It's set to have higher / more sensitive input, so it's good idea first run signal through a gear with output attenuation such as preamp, for more control over the compression threshold.

OVERALL: Highly recommended. One of the most obvious upgrades over plugins
