Boss RC – for Real Creativity

The Boss RC-10R Rhythm Station from the renowned Japanese audio pioneer combines a feature-packed looper pedal with a versatile drum machine that's capable of a huge range of styles. The result is a modern, professional performance tool that will help boost any musician's creativity, as well as providing practical support when writing songs. Boss has a reputation for both innovation and quality, and the RC-10R Rhythm Station reflects that perfectly: Professional sound quality is delivered by the 32-bit AD/DA converters and its library of authentic drum sounds. With 280 drum patterns across various genres, even the most productive players won't be running out of ideas any time soon. Speaking of productivity: The Boss RC-10R boasts a generous six hours of recording time and can save up to 99 loops, for instant access to an entire setlist of songs. The dual LED dials and bright LC screen keep things clear and ensure musicians always have everything under control, even with the device's many features.

Boss RC-10R Rhythm Loop Station

Rhythms in red

Boss has always had a bold approach to design in general and colour in particular, and the striking red of the RC-10R Rhythm Station doesn't break from this trend. Physically, its dimensions match those of two standard pedals. And functionally, the RC-10R offers stereo input and output, each split into two mono jack sockets, allowing musicians to hook up guitars, basses, keyboards, and more. Because the loops and drums can be sent either as one signal, or separately to different amps, an optimum sound is always ensured. The two footswitches handle all the key functions, like starting and stopping recording and playback, overdubbing, undo/redo, and more. New to this model are the two LED rings, showing both the operating mode (record, overdub, playback) and the timing and structure of the loops and drum sequences. Power for the Boss RC-10R Rhythm Station comes from the mains adapter that comes included.

For songwriters and soloists

The Boss RC-10R Rhythm Station has been designed specifically as a tool for writing songs, so it's aimed first and foremost at ambitious, musically well-versed songwriters. But Boss is sure that a simple drum machine won't be enough – which is why the RC-10R’s drum patterns are clearly split into parts like intro, verse, chorus, and outro, making it easy to lay down very dynamic tracks. Of course, the Rhythm Station can also serve as what we might call a traditional looper, with or without drums. As such, it's easy for a single musician to turn their performances into fully-fledged live acts, with percussion, chords, melody, solos, and more. Compose and practise at home, workshop ideas on stage with a live audience, then upload the finished product to YouTube, Insta or TikTok: The Boss RC-10R Rhythm Station gives inventive musicans free rein for all their musical ideas.

About Boss

The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.

Complete creative control

If the features of the Boss RC-10R Rhythm Station still aren't enough, the proprietary software can be used to turn anyone into a power user. The built-in 280 drum patterns in styles like Pop, Rock, Funk, Soul, Metal, and Jazz already offer a huge library of grooves, but creative beatmakers can also upload their own drum rhythms in the .smf MIDI format and store them in one of the 50 memory slots. Add an optional footswitch or expression pedal, and functions like start/stop, undo/redo, loop volume, and much more can be controlled with ease – so the guitar riffs or keyboard melodies never have to stop. The TRS mini-jack sockets serve as MIDI in and MIDI out, meaning MIDI controllers can be hooked up to give musicians access to key functions and sync options too.

I honestly believe that this is one of the best loopers in the market. It has everything someone would need and many more.
Pros: amazing quality, amazing sound, a lot of different drum loops, endless features
Cons: price, kinda complicated (you need some time to get used to the many features)

Great looper with a badly broken rhythm section.
<jbc> 12.04.2021
The looper side of this pedal is great.

But the rhythm side is bad. The management software is worse.

Boss is sure you will love their rhythms patterns, so they are all practically the same and there is no way to edit them. You'll have to audition them all to find out what they are 'cause they provide no notational index.

The software to edit patterns is straight out of the '90s and bad. Plus, you can't edit the included patterns.

There is no management software for the settings stored within the device globally or the settings within the patterns individually.

I'm keeping this unit based upon the utility and quality of the looper side.

I would not buy another unless Roland/Boss addresses the deficiencies of the rhythm side with a serious firmware + management software upgrade. My unit has the newest firmware at the time of writing this comment ( Ver.1.09 ).

I don't do reviews, but this product was special.

Nice Looper
Zak Mondo 19.01.2020
I have been using Digitech Jammans for a few years. It?s really nice to have the drum machine. The patterns are really good and the sound of the kits are excellent. It takes a bit of practice to switch between parts A and B, but this is true of all loopers. The rhythm converter software tool for midi patterns is a bit basic and could do with some more functionality. It also takes a bit of trial and error to get the right volume level for imported wave files so that the recorded guitar sits at the right level in the mix. A tap tempo function would also be useful but you can do this with and external CTL Switch. All in all a big step up from the jammans but not as good in terms of functionality as the RC 300, but then again it fits in your pocket.

If you need to combine a simple looper with a close to beatbuddy drum machine this one is good.
I bought it because I couldn't afford something better atm, it does the job for my simple solo and duo act on a basic level. Sound quality is not fantastic but rather good, some of the settings are frustrating to dial, if you combine it with an extra single or even dual footswitch, the experience becomes much better. Huge advantage is that the loops can be stored and that you can load your backing tracks in there. The screen display is a bit outdated. The construction is sturdy. If you are planning to do more complicated stuff that A-B, this is not for you.
