An acoustic guitar preamp, a microphone preamp, integrated effects and even a phrase looper – the Boss VE-8 brings all of this together in one compact unit, offering singing guitarists a complete toolkit that makes additional gear virtually unnecessary. The VE-8 provides two fully independent channels, one for guitar and the other for vocals – the latter supports both dynamic and condenser mics. What's more, each channel is equipped with a versatile effects section tailored to its source, such as vocal harmonisers or guitar-specific processing. To shape the sound further, the VE-8 includes a detailed EQ with low cut, bass, treble and a fully parametric mid band, giving performers full and precise control over their mix.
In a clear and compact floor unit, the Boss VE-8 combines two fully featured, specialised channels that can be routed separately or together to an acoustic amplifier, a PA system, or (via an AD converter) directly to a computer. The guitar channel features reverb, delay, multiple modulation effects, and an Acoustic Resonance function, as well the essential tools of a tuner and a notch filter. Similarly, the vocal channel includes its own reverb, an enhancer to add clarity to any singer's voice, and a harmony effect that adds one or two choir voices harmonising either with a preset key or the guitar itself. Completing the setup, a three-band EQ and a versatile phrase looper – capable of processing guitar, vocals, or both – ensure that performers have a rich and flexible palette of artistic options at their fingertips.
The Boss VE-8 is designed primarily for singing guitarists who typically perform solo, or with a small rhythm section; with just one or two active speakers alongside the unit, any musician or group will already have a more or less complete setup, since the VE-8 Acoustic Singer delivers fully processed signals, which ae also available in balanced form. This makes the device equally well suited for larger stages where a front-of-house mixer handles the sound, but its usefulness extends beyond that core application, as the quality of the vocal and guitar effects is so convincing that many may be tempted to use the VE-8 purely as an effects processor – and with its accessible price point, that decision is all the easier.
The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.
Guitar, microphone and the VE-8 form a powerful combination for any guitarist, with the stage being its natural home – but by no means the only one. Singing musicians can just as easily use it at home to rehearse their performances or simply to lose themselves in its rich sound, and with its headphone output, they won't even need a speaker. The possibilities extend beyond the living room too, since battery operation makes it possible to practise anywhere – even out in a quiet clearing in the woods.
Acoustic Resonance
Pickups on acoustic guitars are typically placed beneath the bridge saddle, where they capture the string vibrations with precision but fail to convey the distinctive acoustic qualities of the body, such as vibration nodes and resonances. The Acoustic Resonance function is designed to overcome this limitation, giving the instrument a sound that is fuller, more resonant, and more natural, with a character much closer to that of an unamplified acoustic guitar.
