Acoustic adjustment included

The Genelec 8030 CP is an active two-way studio monitor that delivers the first-class sound producers the world over have come to expect from the Finnish manufacturer. With its signature, stylish housing produced from lightweight die-cast aluminium, this model features two separate amplifiers with a total output of 100W, driving the 5" woofer and 3/4" tweeter to deliver sound pressure levels of up to 110dB SPL per stereo pair. In addition to its automatic start function, this speaker also allows the frequency response to be adjusted to the room's acoustic conditions. A balanced XLR input allows signals to be fed in without interference, while a protective circuit prevents driver damage by intercepting short-term level peaks. however, this model does not include magnetic shielding.

Impressive range of features

With a frequency range from 54Hz to 20kHz, the Genelec 8030 CP delivers impressive low-end performance for a compact monitor. To achieve this, the speaker uses bass reflex technology, which maximises low-frequency sound pressure and extends the driver transmission range. For adjustment to room conditions, the bass frequencies can be reduced by either -2dB or -4dB with this model, or rolled off completely. The treble levels can also be reduced by -2dB. When the monitor is placed on a reflective surface, activating the Desktop Control function helps prevent frequencies between 160 and 200Hz from becoming overly pronounced. The (deactivatable) automatic start function detects whether a signal is present and automatically switches the amplifier unit on as required. This makes the speaker easy to operate and helps save energy.

For the discerning listener

Anyone looking for a monitor speaker with a flat frequency response and a spacious, three-dimensional sound will not be disappointed with the Genelec 8030 CP. As this device does not include a volume control, it is best suited to studio setups where the listening level is adjusted via an external monitor controller. If playback remains consistently too loud or too quiet, the speaker's sensitivity can be adjusted using a small rotary control. The speaker is an excellent choice for recording and mixing professionals who rely on consistently high-quality sound. Its housing materials and shape also contribute, minimising resonances and ensuring optimum sound dispersion in multi-speaker setups.

About Genelec

Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec's loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensure that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound "Company of the Year" award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.

Ideal for stereo and surround setups

Whether in a professional studio, home setup, or editing suite, the Genelec 8030 CP delivers outstanding results thanks to its flat frequency response and room-adaptation features. It can be used not only as part of a stereo set, but also as a component in a surround setup. Genelec also offers a suitable subwoofer for this purpose – the Genelec 7040APM. When used on resonant surfaces such as a desk or stand, the integrated IsoPod comes into play, decoupling the speaker from its support surface using a combination of rubber feet and connecting bars. Threaded inserts at the rear of the housing provide secure mounting. Genelec also supplies suitable mounting accessories, such as the Genelec Z8000-412B Wall Mount.

Perfect home studio speaker for Hifi and production
Sam 0619 14.11.2020
Nice industrial build, only non perfection are the jointing gap between the al enclosure have very tiny amount of unevenness on gap distance to be "Japanese" type of detail attention

Dip switches adapted to my very tiny room (4 m2) producing near perfect response and a very clear, detailed sound. If anything to be improved I would say the sensitivity, it's too sensitive even set to -6dB, where beside my preamp near lowest setting I need to control volume digitally through my DAC

I love my Gennies
Mr. Alex 13.03.2021
My first set of Gennies and very impressed how they sound. They might be a tad flattering yet are analytical enough to perfect the mix but allowing me enjoy the sound in the process.

Versatile true monitor from a well established manufacturer – what more to ask for?
@llex 17.08.2025
Generally speaking, one can hardly go wrong with these speakers. You should bear in mind, though, that they are a compromise given their size, but this is exactly what makes them so versatile. If I had the financial means and enough space on my desktop, I would probably go for a pair of their bigger siblings, simply because more bass is always welcome. But what is there in terms of low end is informative enough and definitely does not disappoint. Of course, personal preferences and acoustical characteristics play a huge role here, but I would like to emphasise that we should not have huge expectations of thunderous bass from a 5-inch driver. And if, by any chance, you find these speakers booming (as one reviewer pointed out), then you can simply use the tone control settings on the back to tame the bass.

I am still in a process of evaluating mine. So far I am quite happy with my choice. My setup consists of a pair sitting on a desk in a small, bedroom-like environment. Although their proximity to the back wall suggests using the tone controls settings and attenuate the bass, I ended up without making any adjustments at all, at least until I take care of some reverberations in the room and make some measurements in order to know what exactly I am dealing with acoustically speaking.

I usually avoid describing sound as this is highly subjective, but I would say that the speakers are very revealing. I happen to have a few DACs at the moment of writing this review and was able to play a bit with all of them. What strike me is how easily I could say the difference in the sound characteristics between them.

In terms of features, I am slightly disappointed that they don’t have an RCA input and this is probably the only negative thing I can say about them. The autostart (ISS) function is working smoothly and the auto power off takes a bit more than what I would normally expect – around 45 minutes or so, not a biggie.

Finally, I would like to say that I can only recommend Genelec 8030. They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you happen to be on the fence about them, I can confidently suggest to give them a try.

Beware of your room acoustics... very bassy monitors!
DavC 17.05.2023
I'll start by saying that therse monitors are very well made. They produce A LOT of bass frequencies for their size!

My personnal needs were for some edits and pre-mixing in a home setup. Typical bed-room setup, close to a wall... I just couldn't find a good and flat sound with them, whatever the back filters I used, too much bass/boominess, strange mid resolution... For me, they didn't translate at all! ... I'm back on a pair of Yamaha HS5 and for some reasons, they sound much better for my application. Go figure...

Also, you have to 'like' the Genelec tone (yes, they have a 'tone'). I've had a few of their models in the past 20 years, and they all share the same top-end / high type of tone. You like or not... I'm past the return window now, so my pair is now for sale.
