HSS without the excess

Harley Benton ST-Modern Plus HSS MOD electric guitar – front view

The ST-Modern Plus HSS Matt Olive Drab from Harley Benton's Pro Series is an electric guitar built around a versatile HSS pickup configuration that combines an open-coil Tesla humbucker in the bridge position with two matching single coils in the middle and neck, allowing a smooth transition from powerful Rock tones to clear, articulate clean sounds. The design follows a refined aesthetic: With its matt olive-green finish and black pickguard, the guitar always stands out visually, yet it also fits right in with heavier, distorted sounds. Beyond its appearance, the instrument is equipped with a range of professional features, including a high-quality Babicz tremolo system, fluorescent side dots, and staggered machine heads that support stable tuning and ease of use. The familiar ST body shape ensures a comfortable playing feel, making it suitable for extended sessions in a range of different styles and settings. Altogether, the combination of tonal flexibility, thoughtful design, and reliable hardware makes this model a well-rounded choice that remains affordable without compromising on performance.

Packed with pro features

The Harley Benton ST-Modern Plus HSS MOD employs the classic ST body shape, with a body crafted from American alder that contributes to both resonance and visual appeal, while the ergonomically designed neck joint ensures comfortable access even in the highest registers. The bolt-on neck is made from thermally treated (roasted) American maple, which gives it not only a distinctive look but also a noticeably refined feel in the hand, while its flat D-profile supports smooth playability. The rosewood fingerboard in turn features 22 medium-jumbo stainless steel frets, enhanced further by rounded semi-spherical fret ends, a detail more commonly associated with high-end instruments. The pickups are governed by master volume and tone knobs, allowing consistent adjustment regardless of the selected pickup, while a five-way switch makes it easy to move through the different tonal options.

Even more than an all-rounder

The Harley Benton ST-Modern Plus HSS MOD is an all-round guitar designed for players who enjoy the clarity of classic single-coil tones but also need greater versatility for modern Rock and high-gain sounds, with the bridge humbucker delivering a bright and powerful sound with plenty of body. The tone control features a push/pull feature that allows the humbucker to be split, unlocking the popular "second position" ST-style sound with the bridge and middle pickups as single coils for added sparkle and flexibility. The high-quality Babicz tremolo system is fully integrated into the Pro concept, and its wide range of travel opens the door to divebombs and other expressive techniques, while the locking machine heads in turn ensure reliable tuning stability. Truss rod adjustment at the body end of the neck also means that neck relief can be adjusted with the utmost ease, and the guitar comes strung with a set of coated Elixir strings in gauges .010-.046.

In full humbucker mode, the bridge pickup provides powerful, punchy Rock tones, while the middle and neck pickups offer warm, full-bodied clean sounds well suited for bluesy double stops or more refined Jazz comping. The neck pickup on its own performs particularly well for expressive single-note lines and lead work, and this wide tonal range makes the instrument a strong choice for developing players exploring different genres and sound possibilities, as well as for more experienced performers who will benefit from the reduced need for multiple guitars on stage. For touring use, its stable tuning and reliable gig-ready design also make it a convenient alternative to bringing valuable vintage instruments on the road.

Fantastic guitar & the fretwork is insanely good.
Filip Cervin 19.03.2026
For the price you pay for this gem, this is amazing bang for your buck.

Fretwork is the best I have ever seen from factory.. seriously. The materials used look fantastic, zero imperfections anywhere in the paint, all sounds good, was in tune and intonated perfectly out of the box.

I'm stunned at what this offers for this price. I'll be buying more top end Harley Benton instruments, no question.

ONE tiny note tho; The colors are darker than they appear on the photos. Likely due to great lighting in the photo studio. But keep that in mind. The satine olive drab paintjob looks amazing but is darker than it appears in the images. Same goes for the flame maple neck, it's quite a bit darker than in the images, but it all still looks and feels absolutely amazing. The guitar play's very well out of the box.

Whenever I review anything I always base my scoring in "what you get for the money" and this is one of the easiest 5/5 scores I've ever had to give anything in my life.

It's just unbelieveble
Lucicu 10.03.2026
I don't know. Maybe I got lucky, but I got an unbelievable guitar. It feels so smooth to play, so articulated. The fretboard is the best I have ever seen on any guitar I have owned. The frets are perfectly smoothed, and I cant stop looking at it. I measured them and THEY DONT NEED TO BE LEVELED. This is a first. The body is just flawless. The neck fits perfect in my huge hands, looks like a tigers back with the flame marks, plus an amazing detail I totally appreciate, the side dots on the neck are these jade cool looking stones surrounded by stainless steel. The trem is a beast, and so comfortable to mute the strings on. No matter what I do, how far I bend the trem, the strings just stay in tune. The nut aswell seems fine, perfectly cut, no complains there.
Now, not everything is perfect. The pickups are decent, but I think I will change them in the future with some Toneriders to get that sound that I am looking for. The tuners do their job well, but the tuning pegs are cheap plastic. Can't understand why they cheaped out on them, when the rest of the guitar is of such a high quality. I'll change them with some metal ones. The string tree has these metal string guides that seem to be fine but just to be sure, I will change them with the ones from Graph tech.
But other than that... my god, what an amazing tool.

Fantastische Gitarre
Alex Berlakov 10.02.2026
