Won't intonate on long scale and needs HIGH action on a fretless.
TrEr 03.02.2020
I got these for an Ibanez SRH500F fretless.

The sound was slightly lacking in clarity but very smooth, warm and none of that nastly clacking that tapewounds from certain other manufacturers have. Probably the closest I've come to a double bass on a fretless.

However, the extremely low tension caused the strings to rattle horribly when the bass was adjusted for normal relief. I had to loosen the truss rod a LOT to (almost) get rid of the rattle. At this point the relief and action was much higher than what I would consider normal. Pyramid advertise these strings as fretless strings. I'm not so sure... I love Pyramid tapewounds on my Höfner but they didn't work at all for me on this fretless.

But the worst part was the fact that the higher strings were impossible to intonate. The G-string was the worst. The bass is a standard 34" long scale but the G-string was EXTREMELY flat in the 12th fret even with the saddle moved all the way forward. I'm starting to suspect these strings aren't really designed for long scale basses but short scale basses that require long scale strings due to a tail piece. The intonation was so far off that EVERY note on the G-string sounded dissonant and out of tune, even when the open string was tuned perfectly to pitch. Even the perfectly tunes open G sounded horrible with a dissonant "knocking".

I ended up installing Tomastik Jazz Flats instead. They gave me perfect intonation, FAR better clarity and stronger mids (not quite as double bass'ish though) and no rattle.

I'm sure these strings can sound great on the right bass but on my Ibanez fretless they were horrible to the point of being useless. I'm generally a huge fan of Pyramid strings but this turned out to be a complete disaster.

EDIT: I tried installing them on a short scale with tailpiece (Gretsch Broadkaster) and encountered the exact same problems with intonation as on the long scale. The intonation is so ridiculously far off that either my set must be faulty or this must be a bad batch or something. Pyramid normally make such great strings and I honestly can't imagine them deliberately designing a set of strings as poor as this one. The strings are totally useless and are already in the thrash. What a waste of money.

Great sounding strings, pronounced but smooth! I've put them on a jazz bass, lowered the action a bit, and they turned it into a completely new instrument. They are easy on the fingers too.

B
High class fretless strings!
Bernt 19.08.2016
On my Spector fretless NS2-CTB I started with a set of TI jazz flats. Good, but not perfect ...next out Labella Black Tapewounds.... better, but still not enough wood....then I stumbled upon the Pyramids.
Compared to the Labellas:
A shade of grey in the color
A velvet-like feel (against the plastic feel of Labellas)
Clear strong harmonics.
Easy to intonate.
First class quality.
Can take hard playing without loosing stature/tone
Tone that cuts through against keyboards and synth
Very nice woody and rich sounding strings!
I would recommend trying these on any fretless bass if you are looking for a rich acoustic kind of sound.
My new favorites !!

Great, if you like low tension strings
Anonymous 01.07.2016
A very old school string, but unlike some other tape wounds, these are very low tension. Easy on the hands, great warm sound but you will have to adjust the action - they are floppy! The only issue is the plastic wrap breaks the earth connection at the bridge, so yo may find an electrical buzz that won't go away in some venues. Not a huge problem, or unique to these Pyramid strings but can be an issue.
