Compact power for pedalboards

The Seymour Duncan PowerStage 200 is a properly powerful pedal-format amplifier designed specifically for guitarists who build their sound entirely from pedalboards or modelling systems: They can simply connect the PowerStage directly between their effects and a speaker cabinet, instead of having to use a traditional amp. Despite its compact dimensions, it delivers an impressive 200W at 4 ohms, although it can actually be used with cabinets up to 16 ohms. An integrated fan ensures reliable heat dissipation, which is especially important when playing at higher volumes and during long gigs. Thanks to this little device's switchable cab simulation and a headphone output, it's equally suited to rehearsal spaces, quiet practice, or recording sessions, while its rugged construction and sleek design only serve to underline its professional credentials.

Make that pedalboard flexible

The control panel of the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 200 is clean and straightforward: Alongside a level dial, there's a four-band EQ with bass, mid, treble, and presence controls, which can shape not only the power amp's main output, but also the signal to the headphone and balanced outputs. Both the EQ and cab simulation can be switched on or off independently, allowing musicians to work flexibly within a variety of different setups. All connections are located on the rear: 6.3mm mono jacks for input and output, a headphone socket, an AUX input, and a balanced XLR out. A trio of status LEDs in turn indicate power, power amp clipping, and preamp clipping. In practice, this all combines to deliver quick setup, minimal space requirements, and a power amp that integrates seamlessly into almost any pedalboard.

From modelling fans to absolute purists

The Seymour Duncan PowerStage 200 is the ideal solution for guitarists whose sound is shaped entirely with their own arsenal of pedals, multi-effects, and modelling systems and who thus simply need a reliable, neutral-sounding power amp. It's perfect for players who want to keep their touring or rehearsal rigs as light as possible, while still enjoying the punch and physical feel of a real cabinet. Studio guitarists who want to be able to switch seamlessly between recording and practising with cab simulation and a live speaker setup will also appreciate this concept. The PowerStage's simple operation makes it accessible to both practised pros and ambitious amateurs, while the rugged construction ensures they'll all have performance they can rely on in live situations.

About Seymour Duncan

The Californian manufacturer Seymour Duncan is one of the largest suppliers of pickup systems for electric and acoustic guitars, as well as basses. The company founded by its namesake also develops pedals and other accessories for guitarists. The current product range is comprehensive and covers a wide variety of construction types. Pickups are available as after-market products, but are also often integrated by many guitar manufacturers, whether in the USA or the Far East (under the name Duncan Designed). In addition to the well-known models, such as JB, Duncan Distortion and Pearly Gates, many signature models have been created for and named after well-known guitarists of all genres, from Mark Knopfler and Joe Bonamassa to Yngwie Malmsteen and Dave Mustaine.

Live, in the studio – or in silence

Live, the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 200 can sit directly behind a pedalboard to drive a guitar cabinet on stage without the need for an additional amp. It does need to be at the very end of the chain before the cab, of course – nobody wants to be sending 200W through another pedal! At the same time, the balanced XLR output, with its switchable cab simulation, provides a signal for FOH or an audio interface. At home or in the studio, the headphone output is perfect for silent practice or pre-production, while the AUX input lets learners play along with external backing tracks. As a backup solution for guitarists who normally use standalone amps or digital rigs, it's also a smart choice, since it can easily replace a full amplifier if needed. And its flexible impedance handling makes the PowerStage 200 universally adaptable, whether it's being used with 1x12, 2x12, or 4x12 cabinets.

Great features, but build quality could be better

I bought the PS200 to power my Fractal FM9 unit and send the signal into my Mesa Mini Rectifier Slant 1x12 cab.

The PS200 does everything you need it to do, and it even has it's own EQ that you can tweak to adjust the sound quickly. I also love the fact that the EQ knobs have a tiny physical barrier at noon position, so you don't even need to look at them when returning them to that position - you feel the knobs lock into the position, so you don't have to wonder whether or not it's perfectly aligned.

It also has headphones output and cab sim options, but since I don't use those, I can't really comment on those.

For the kind of money, however, I'd expect better build quality. Some of the issues I have are purely visual (so they have no impact on the sound), but one of them is the constantly spinning fan.

Visual issues:
- The sides of the lower part of the unit are not completely straight, so where they join with the upper part of the unit, the edges are not aligned perfectly.
- The knob for Bass control has been tightened to the potentiometer under an angle, so when the knob locks into the "noon" position, the line points towards 1 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock.

The fan is something I feel Seymour Duncan could improve upon. It's constantly running and for quiet playing, it can get a bit annoying, as you can hear it spin (at least if you're sitting close to the unit). At low volumes one would think that the fan wouldn't even have to be running. Fortunately, normal bedroom volumes or band practices are way louder so unless you're playing super quietly, you won't hear the fan spinning.

TL;DR: A great unit to power your modeller with a bunch of great features. At the current price point the build quality could have been better.

R
Świetny kieszonkowy power amp
Romhey 24.07.2022
Kupiłem go aby używac Jako końcówkę mocy do Quad Cortex.

S
Sounds great but if you are buying the 200 for the aux in be aware
SKUL 09.09.2023
I went for the 200 instead of the 170 because of the aux in feature.
The aux in only goes to the the headphone output…
So if you were looking to put an playback machine for a gig it will not work.

Sounds great with the quad cortex. Its built like a tank.
