Four channels of great sound
The Zoom M4 MicTrak is a compact field recorder designed to deliver impressive recording quality with minimal effort, combining portability with a surprisingly versatile feature set. Its innovative X/Y microphone capsule captures stereo audio with great clarity, while support for up to 32-bit float recording helps preserve detail even in demanding recording situations. In addition, two further channels can be recorded via XLR combo sockets, which can be used to connect microphones or line signals, for example from a mixing desk. A special finish on the housing reduces unwanted handling noise during operation, and the built-in LCD screen provides clear visual feedback with a live waveform while recording. Powered by four AA batteries with up to 11 hours of operation, the recorder is immensely convenient for mobile use and offers a simple way to achieve clean, studio-quality recordings almost anywhere.
32-bit floating point for optimum quality
With 32-bit float recording, the Zoom M4 MicTrak captures highly detailed audio while effectively preventing distortion caused by clipping, allowing recording levels to be adjusted afterwards without the need for careful gain setup in advance. Its interface is intentionally simple and clearly organised, with the two central buttons controlling headphone volume and the headphone output positioned on the left-hand side for convenient monitoring during use. A dedicated LO CUT function helps reduce unwanted low-frequency noise such as footfall interference, and buttons 1 and 2 allow the display to switch between the additional inputs for easier monitoring control. The lower transport section provides straightforward access to recording and playback functions, keeping the overall workflow smooth and efficient.
A true all-rounder
The Zoom M4 MicTrak is designed as a versatile all-round field recorder for a wide variety of recording situations, and thanks to its two additional inputs, it can also capture complete live performances directly from a mixing desk. Phantom power support allows condenser microphones to be connected, while an additional 3.5mm line input gives the option to use a lavalier microphone for focused voice recording. Its microphone-style design allows secure mounting on standard microphone stands for precise positioning toward the sound source, and despite its capabilities, the recorder remains lightweight at just 232 grams. A matching windscreen is included for cleaner outdoor recordings, while the built-in speaker enables flexible monitoring directly from the device.
About Zoom
Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.
Flexible recording conversion
Up to 99 markers can be added during recording on the Zoom M4 MicTrak, making it easier to locate important passages quickly during editing and review. All recordings are stored on an optional microSD card and can later be normalised directly through the menu to maximise playback volume for further use. In addition, 32-bit float recordings can be converted internally to 16-bit or 24-bit formats for broad compatibility with different audio software and production workflows. The recorder can also be connected directly to a computer via USB and used as an audio interface, allowing audio captured through the internal X/Y capsule to be recorded straight to the computer.
