Superlux HD-681 The New industry standard ? could well be !

Superlux HD-681 The New industry standard ? could well be !

I have a studio and i am at the moment recording and mixing tracks for a 13 piece funk band, some of their tracks are getting toward 48 tracks!,
Now, thats alot of clutter too make sence of.
while doing the keyboard tracks, i gave the keyboard player a pair of Bayer DT100, and after a few seconds
he took them off and said they sounded "Horrid" he then plugged in a pair he had brought with him, a pair of HD-681 i played the track and the nod of his head confirmed all was better, he took them off and let me try, i did an A,B test against the DT100, and must admit i liked the HD 681better,
Now i know the thought behind the DT100s as monitor headphones, build quality, parts, industry standards ETC, and you dont get the isolation with the 681 that the DT100 offers.
But if others pref the Superlux who am i to try and tec talk them out of their comfort zone ?
If they know how they sound in them then thats just perfect.
On the back of all that, i purchased a few pairs and having lived with them for while now, i have just Purchased another few pairs from Thomanns for the studio, People like them, and if they are happy i am happy and i am even more happy about the price, £16.35 does not buy you alot now days,
I am sure you will like these for what you will pay,
i really dont think there is alot out there that comes close for up to triple the price, and there can't be
ANYTHING at the same price or less.
They seem abit bass heavy, and i can hear the very lows in them, which is a good thing i have tried this taking low freq on the Eq which seems to respond better than my AKGs,
But i also got a pair of HD-681B which have a flatter bass response, but i still like the normal HD681.

So, you are now thinking, "ok, do i take the chance ?"
i dont think at £16 it is a chance,

try them, and if you hate them, its no big loss against getting another pair for £100+ and you hating them.
Because at the end of the day it is still how YOUR ears
hear things.

Me ? i like them, i am going to use them to mix the next "funkafonix" single release, as i am now used to them and know how things sound in them to alter for sounding good on CD,
So, fingers crossed, we shall see

Not exactly Pro standards, but superb for music and gaming on a budget!
Nate in Belgium, 07.06.2020
I bought these to listen to music and for playing PC games after reading online recommendations. I have them connected to a Monolith Liquid Spark headphone amp connected to my PC's onboard DAC line out.

My main decision was based on sound quality, imaging and price. I liked the noted sound signature listed on the Superlux website and from reviews I've read. I have to say I'm actually blown away with how they sound! These have a nicer sound signature than my old Sennheiser HD580s. Yes they are cheaply built, but look how much they cost. I'm sure if you look after them and treat them with respect they will last long enough. My biggest complaint is the clamping force and thin earpads. Very uncomfortable, I've ordered thicker velour pads from China to compensate.

Pros: Spacious sound with good clarity, depth and punch making them ideal for gaming. Gorgeously musical. Ridiculous price.

Cons: Treble forward. Not going to compete with high end headphones (but snapping at the heels of phones costing 5-10x as much). Clamping force is probably the worst I've encountered. Build quality fits what you pay for...cheap.

Decent affordable open headphones
Richard0401, 28.12.2020
Pros:
-Affordable
-Decent quality, doesnt feel as cheap as the price would suggest
-Pretty flat sounding

Cons:
-High frequencies are not very defined
-Cable not removable

I got these headphones as a backup and to try out what open headphones have to offer as I've only used closedbacks before. I mainly used it for gaming and for silently practicing guitar and for those purposes these headphones are great. Sound is decent, its fairly flat, not too much bass and not very bright either, nicely balanced. The soundstage (stereo separation) is great, not perfect but definately usable for most situations, especially if you are on a budget. Comfort is not the greatest but I can wear it for an hour or two without discomfort so its not too bad. The padding is very stiff but the clamping force on your ears is not that strong so it cancels out. You dont need a good seal for open headphones afterall...

If you are on a limited budget I can highly recommend these headphones. They sound flat enough for basic mixing and the open design also helps a lot.
However... I can't recommend these headphones for outside or public use because of its open design.
Also if you are lookign for a very high quality professional monitor then I recommend you spend a bit more money...

Good for the price
brendrum, 06.01.2021
Look they're cheap headphones so there's not much to say, they work, there's a good sound i've had no problem with them and i've used them over two years. I only use them now and then when recording, but i would imagine if you're picky about sound spend more money on headphones. But if you're me , then youll be happy
