Into the far reaches of outer space

In the world of electric guitar, reverb has a long history. Even today, some people's first thought is the characteristic spring reverb of combo amps – this isn't wrong, of course, but it's worth remembering that digital spatial simulations have been evolving steadily over the last forty years or so, improving in terms of both authenticity and flexibility. Eventide has been at the forefront of these developments since the very start, and the Space is the renowned US manufacturer's flagship reverb pedal, delivering everything from subtle ambience or enough sustain to just lend a track some support – all the way through to truly otherworldly sounds. This can all be applied to an instrument or the mix as a whole, and comes in a compact, stage-ready unit that can save every detail of a user's favourite preset.

Eventide Space reverb pedal

A whole studio in pedal format

The Eventide Factor family of pedals – to which the Space at least semi-officially belongs – are far more than just conventional guitar pedals: They are specialised studio effects with a carefully curated set of algorithms, housed in rugged yet compact enclosures and with an interface specifically designed for real-time control. The Eventide Space, a dedicated reverb pedal, offers twelve top-tier effect types, and is controlled by three footswitches and eleven knobs; it has a display, stereo ins and outs, MIDI, plus inputs for external footswitches, an expression pedal, and a USB port for the free-of-charge editing software. Naturally, there's also a configurable bypass function to keep signal loss to a minimum.

A cornucopia of effects – 12 algorithms, 100 presets...

Each of the Eventide Space's 100 preset slots draws on one of the device's twelve specialised algorithms, all of which make good use of the full processing power of the onboard DSP to deliver uncompromising studio quality. The Space is aimed at both working musicians and more experimental artists: Either way, the options at their disposal include plate reverb, room and hall simulations, modulated and dynamic reverbs, both reverse reverb and dual reverb spaces, and Eventide's signature blend of reverb and pitch shifter (shimmer). Of course, the classic spring reverb is present and correct too, in a very adaptable version with built-in tremolo. And finally, there's Blackhole – a unique reverb designed to create deliberately supernatural spaces for surreal soundscapes.

About Eventide

The US manufacturer Eventide is one of the pioneers of digital audio technology. The company has existed since the early 1970s and began with developments in the broadcasting sector and digital delay effects. As early as 1974 they unveiled the H910, a pitch shifter revolutionary at the time. The H3000 (1986) was milestone in the field of digital effects and was very popular with professional musicians in recording studios and live performances. The following generations of this model were ever more powerful and culminated in the current flagship H9000. Since 2007, Eventide has also been developing compact pedals, primarily for guitarists and keyboard players. To this day, Eventide's algorithms are considered among the best on the market.

The Space for every space – studio, stage, and more

The Eventide Space's well-equipped control panel and clear display make it easy for musicians to dive right in, tweaking the sound-shaping parameters of the various effect algorithms – and they have even more control using an expression pedal or MIDI. On top of that, the free H9 Control editing suite gives users full access to the algorithms' parameters and presets, for macOS, Windows, and iOS. It's little surprise, then, that the Factor series – originally consisting of the Time, Pitch, and Mod models, with the Space an unofficial cousin thanks to its near-identical chassis – have been hugely popular on stage and in the studio since their launch. One major advantage they all have in common is the fact that their preset storage function allows creative musicians access to a constantly changing array of unique, personalised effects. And with their premium sound quality, versatile features, and the robust build and intuitive interface that life on stage demands, these pedals aren't just a hit with guitarists, but also with keyboard players, EDM live acts, and studio engineers.

k
Still one of the greatest pedal reverbs after all these years
kbra 27.12.2021
Bought one from Thomann, used for a few years, sold it to try other things, recently bought another one used, feel like a happy camper again.

There is a crazy amount of choice in good pedal reverbs these days, and everyone has their favourite (or favourites) regarding the algorithms, features, interface and what not. I do have several favourites depending on situation and use myself. Eventide Space is easy and straightforward to use for something as deep as it is, and leans very much toward "unnatural" sounding spaces. You won't get a decent spring or a very natural sounding hall here, but what you do get is fantastic sounding verbs from small "synthetic" rooms and halls to (by now overused) pitch-shifting shimmer verbs, and the huge, venerable Blackhole that still lives up to its name. There's a very decent variety in algorithms (not a dozen variations on the same theme like with some pedal verbs) and everything sounds good in an Eventide sort of way.

Space is also one of the few options out there that actually takes professional line levels properly. If you're running a line level effects loop, a hot guitar amp modeling rig, or a desktop synth studio, that's going to be a major selling point after trying out a few pedal verbs that clip way too easily.

I use the Eventide Space as a creative tool to influence music making and as a studio-quality effect that can be used in a live environment. I use it with Moog synth, acoustic instruments, vocals etc.

Pros
Build quality is very robust.
Great, BIG reverbs.
Many algorithms for traditional or experimental sounds.
Very flexible, programmable and customisable.

Cons
Learning curve can be intimidating, but worth persevering.
Experience/judgement needed to tame some of the wilder settings.

Overall
Highly recommended reverb/effects device that feels like it will keep you sound designing happily for years.

A
Love me my SPACE
Anonymous 02.12.2014
what can i say, it was the missing link in my rig, mainly modularsynth based.
in the meantime i got me a second SPACE. one is in the masterinsert of the desk for subtle Reverb purposes, one is on 1-2 Aux sends for more radical Reverb and FX purposes.
perfect for my modularsynth !
perfect for older rompler Keyboards/Pianos to get a nice but decent Reverb to that sound.
some people seem not to gel with the SPACE.
Give it enough time ! you have to get the hung for the parameters.
my Tip: probably use at first only a few algorythms.
use one or two.
The jammability of the SPACE is immens ! it is much more than a reverb.
it is FX ;)
happy wiggler cat here
