A pocket-sized MADI interface

The MADIface USB from RME Audio combines a mixer, router, format converter, stream splitter, and signal repeater in a single interface that connects directly to a computer or laptop for operation. Via the MADI audio network, it can process up to 128 channels at a sample rate of 48kHz, while sample rates of up to 196kHz are supported with as many as 32 channels. Its extremely low latency also makes it well suited to streaming applications, while the front panel provides both optical and coaxial inputs and outputs for flexible connectivity. The end result is a versatile solution for a wide range of audio applications.

TotalMix software for intelligent signal routing

On the rear of the MADIface USB, a USB 2.0 port is provided to allow it to be connected to a computer or laptop, while RME's TotalMix software enables independent routing and complex mixing across all channels. The dedicated "Control Room" section gives users an overview of the entire routing setup and provides access to monitoring settings, with 64 channels available for recording and 64 for playback at a sample rate of 48kHz, allowing inputs and outputs to operate independently. All signals processed by TotalMix are routed to both outputs of the MADIface USB, while the software also provides an independent mix output and allows the second source to be routed in series.

Easy integration into any setup

The MADIface USB is designed for professional applications in live and broadcast environments and is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. RME's SteadyClock technology ensures reliable synchronisation with other MADI devices, while MIDI-over-MADI allows connected MADI equipment to be controlled remotely. The AutoSelect function automatically switches to the second input if the active one fails, providing additional security during operation, in addition to which RME's DIGICheck software offers precise analysis of audio data streams, with spectral analysis and multi-channel level meters on Mac OS X, as well as a multitrack recorder on Windows.

About RME

RME is a brand of Audio AG based in Haimhausen near Munich, Germany. It enjoys a worldwide reputation and is especially known for offering support for all users of any platform thanks to cross-platform connectivity between Windows and Mac OS via various interface formats. An extensive repertoire of audio interfaces, converters and microphone preamps, all based on innovative and extremely powerful core technologies, offer optimum performance to all RME users. This explains why RME's devices are used in a wide range of applications all over the world. From recording studios and theatres to broadcasting companies and scientific institutions, many users rely on the quality of RME products.

Create headphone mixes in a flash

Using TotalMix, the RME MADIface USB allows users to create versatile, delay-free mixes, with up to 32 independent mixes for musicians and performers that can be set up quickly during live events. Signals can also be routed to multiple outputs simultaneously, allowing the MADIface USB to function as a signal splitter, while several programmes from different playback channels can be combined into a single stereo channel. TotalMix supports full ASIO Direct Monitoring (ADM) for efficient mixing, while the absence of an internal DSP chip means that no internal effects are applied. External effects units can instead be integrated into the recording and playback paths, making real-time monitoring possible and, for example, allowing reverb to be added to vocals.

Tiny, bomb proof, ad beutifully finished.

This was bought as an alternative to the digico ubmadi, and the older express card madiface, with a view to use it for archiving live shows, recorded from either digico or digidesign consoles, though will work with any madi capable unit, and for using those archived shows for virtual soundcheck possibilities while touring. This, it does flawlessly, using any of the the DAWs Ive access to, reaper, cubase, logic, and pro tools, without any issues, or glitches, in fact, less issues than my moto 828 hybrid. In addition to this work, I needed to finish mixing an ep for a band I was working with on the road, and this unit allowed me to use the live console I was touring with, coupled with Pro Tools 9HD to act like a mobile studio, and overdub a few vocals, and add some drums, all seamlessly, and on a 3 year old cheap HP laptop bought from a hughstreet chain in a hurry

Very Impressed

A
Very reliable piece of gear
Anonymous 08.12.2015
I bought this unit to connect my SPL Madison DA/AD converter to my computer and as expected I had no problems with it (never had any with RME gear).

The driver is super stable. I was aware that some users mentioned issues when using external clock at higher sampling frequencies, but I had no problems at all. I clocked it by Madison's internal clock and it works as stable at 96KHz as it is at 44.1KHz (never tested it at 192KHz).

There are only 2 things I don't like about this unit - there is no power switch, and there is no monitoring output. Even a simple headphone jack output would be of a great help, but there is none. Everything else is perfect.

Nice little device. After setting it up (easy) You can forget its existence - it is very-very stable, works 100%. I'am using SPL Madison with it. DAW's I'am using: Logic Pro and PreSonus Studio One.

Good product, recommend.

Great product

Used this to run recordings and playback for multitracks from a computer source to the console via MADI, great for doing training and shows, although the caution is always to get a reliable PC at the other end, because a solution is only as good as your weakest link.
