Rhythm and melody

The Sela Harmony Handpan D Kurd 201 is an ingenious combination of percussion and melody; because of its fixed key, capable by design of only the correct notes, even players without any prior musical knowledge can coax harmonious, immersive, and deeply resonant sounds out of it seemingly effortlessly. It consists of two thin stainless steel bowls that are shaped by hand and then joined together: On the top is the playing surface with the tone fields, and underneath is the resonance hole, also called the gu. The manufacturing process of the Sela Harmony Handpans is extremely complex, as the artisan who tunes them must hammer each individual tone field to achieve exactly the right note – with each tuned section also affecting the tuning of the other fields. The stainless steel, when worked in this way, offers optimal resonance for long sustain.

Sela Harmony Handpan D Kurd 201

With intuition and instinct

Handpans are made by hand to be played by hand. The small dome in the middle of the Sela Harmony Handpan D Kurd 201 produces the lowest note (D3), also called the central note. Surrounding this point, the eight other tone fields are arranged in a circle (A3, Bb3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, and A4), although the sequence of notes progresses from left to right, for a natural, instinctive playfeel. All notes are on the dramatic, yet rather solemn D minor scale. The tone fields are played by tapping or striking them with the fingers or the ball of the thumb; they respond sensitively and clearly to the slightest touch. Depending on where the tone field is struck, players can also generate partial tones and use the 'empty' areas between the tone fields for percussive accents. Handpans are usually played while seated and placed on the legs, although there are also stands available that allow musicians to play while standing, and even use several handpans at once.

Subtle, soothing rhythms

Admittedly, the Sela Harmony Handpan D Kurd 201 is not an entry-level instrument in terms of price, a result of the craftsmanship involved in making each one: However, by no means is it only suitable for professional musicians. Even beginners with no knowledge of musical notation can quickly summon fascinating soundscapes from this instrument, simply by playing it instinctively. And with a little practice and the right playing technique, complex rhythms, two-part melodies, and chords (e.g. Dm, Bb, Am, and C) soon become a reality, too. There is something meditative and spiritual about playing a handpan: Their sound is soothing, yet mysterious, and simply captivating. Apart from a pair of hands, only a subtle awareness of rhythm is needed to completely enchant an audience.

Sounds okay until it doesn't

The first D Kurd 201 handpan I purchased arrived with an out of tune note. The package didn't show any signs of damage, so it means that this is how the handpan was packaged before sent to me.

The second D Kurd 201 handpan I received (after sending back the first one) seemed okay. One day, my 3 years old nephew hit one of the notes with his hand. The note got out of tune. Really...? I had to send it back for repairs. Of course the warranty does not cover this issue, so I had to pay for the delivery and the actual repair... You can imagine my surprise. If a 3 year old has enough power to detune a note (I could hit it harder than him in normal usage), then I can only draw the conclusion that the build quality is simply bad.

To make matters worse, I bought another handpan from them, the C# Kurd 207, and I used it for a month. I didn't even used it on regular basis or much at a time, and a note started going out of tune. Of course I returned it and got a refund.

Update: The D Kurd 201 handpan has been in Sela's service for more than 2 months. I got it back, it sounded okay, and one day, after using it for like 2 months (maximum of one hour usage per week), one note started going out of tune.

Update2: I found someone that crafts and tunes handpans. I gave the handpan to him to tune. After his tuning I had no more problems. So it means that Sela doesn't know how to tune the instruments.

I simply had enough of Sela and their "craftsmanship" and "professionalism".
