The TC Helicon VoiceTone T1 is a combination of compressor, equaliser, and de‑esser, all in one compact pedal. It reduces sibilants and gives any singer's voice an analogue warmth with its preset EQ. This feature set would normally require several devices, but TC Helicon have squeezed this functionality into a vocal processor with a tiny footprint. On top of that, any microphone connected to the XLR input is automatically supplied with 24V phantom power, allowing full focus on the vocal effect itself. The level of the connected microphone is set with a gain control on the side of the unit, keeping it separate from the main control surface. All that's left is to plug in and set the level - and straight away any voice is treated with a studio‑ready effect.
The TC Helicon VoiceTone T1 is remarkably easy to operate, with just two dials and a single button. The Shape dial gives singers access to several programmed EQ bands, all of which will help reduce muddiness in the sound, filtering out low frequencies in general. What this is also does, in turn, is add more treble brilliance to a singer's voice. The other dial serves both to compress the signal and reduce unwanted sibilance, which can also occur when pronouncing the consonants T and D. Finally, the button labelled Warmth adds an analogue depth to the sound, with a red LED indicating whether the function is active. The footswitch turns the entire pedal on and off, and the gain can be set on the left‑hand side of the device.
The TC Helicon VoiceTone T1 gives absolutely any vocalist an easy way of effectively suppressing those harsh‑sounding sibilants that occur when the human voice is amplified – as well as adding focus, brightness, and warmth. Despite this comprehensive functionality, its operation is extremely intuitive and straightforward. As well as the footswitch itself, the VoiceTone T1's effects can also be switched on or off using TC Helicon's own MP‑75 and MP-76 microphones, which have a dedicated Mic Control button right on the handset. Firmware updates can be carried out via the VoiceTone T1's USB port, with a matching USB cable and a power supply included in the package.
TC Helicon was founded in 2000 as a subsidiary of TC Electronic in cooperation with IVL Technologies Ltd. and has since specialised in voice recording technology. TC Helicon focuses primarily on portable audio interfaces. The product range also includes various signal processors designed for the voice, in the form of effect pedals or compact devices with microphone stand mounts. Since 2015, TC Helicon has belonged to Music Tribe, the holding company of Behringer, which has brought brands such as Midas and Klark Teknik under one roof.
The TC Helicon VoiceTone T1 has an XLR input and output on the front, with the latter sending the signal from the pedal itself to a mixing desk for handling the overall volume of the performance. Several models from the VoiceTone series can be connected in series to shape a personal sound; all that's needed here is TC Helicon's Singles Connect Kit, which makes it possible to link up to four compatible effects units. In this setup, the first pedal handles the overall volume. All of TC Helicon’s vocal effects pedals share the same design, with a black metal housing and coloured detailing, giving an appealing and consistent look on stage when several units are chained together.
