Schott Neue Jazz-Harmonielehre

Harmony

The new standard work on jazz harmonics! Harmonica is only justified if it serves the purpose of hearing, for the analytic study of sounds remains a dead science, as long as it is not intended for practical application. In order not to get stuck in an abstract marsh, this new harmonica teaches a close relationship between theory, hearing and instrumentation. It is often difficult for musicians to balance these areas: too often one encounters the virtuoso without personal charisma, the intellectual without intuitive sparks, the passionate without instrumental craftsmanship. This harmony of the harmonics will therefore not turn one-sidedly to the intellect, but will also include feeling and action in its reflections.

Great harmony
Jan1222, 28.12.2016
In my endeavor, which has lasted for decades, finally to understand Western music theory, I have bought this harmony.

After months, I ended up on about page 80, which I mean in a positive sense: unbelievably many, valuable information in the smallest of spaces, one sentence can be as rich as 10 pages elsewhere.

No harmony theory for quick understanding (is there any such thing?), But absolutely sound, detailed, comprehensive and - in the best sense of the word - "exhaustive".

I would recommend this harmony to anyone who wants to approach the subject not from the classical ("serious music"), but popular music side (jazz / rock / pop / metal etc. pp.). The "jazzy" view of music theory is in the foreground (and indeed also in the title) in this harmony theory, but in a way represents only the staple for all popular music genres. So if you only wanted bananas, you get all the other fruits in vain.

Perfect for test preparation

I bought Schott's Neue Harmonielehre some years ago to prepare for the theoretical part of various entrance examinations. It worked quite well, but you get so much more with this book.

The book is (in my opinion useful) divided into three chapters: Understand - Hearing - Play and gives after a theoretical part also valuable exercises for improvisation and ear training.

Now, although I have not played the entrance exams and decided on a different career, I still see this book as a must have on the book shelf of any musician who wants to deal with jazz. Frank Sikora writes very understandably and it is great fun, even after the third or fourth time to work with this book.

Thick buy recommendation on my part.
